What Are Cataracts?

One of the conveniences of Optica 20/20 San Antonio is that we make it easy to see an optometrist by offering same-day appointments. Whether you are interested in a walk-in eye exam to determine if you have cataracts or you require other eye care, our optometrist is available Monday through Saturday.

Understanding Cataracts

Our eyes have a natural lens that refracts rays of light entering the eye and promotes clear vision. For optimal vision, the lens must remain clear. When cataracts are present, the lens becomes cloudy, resulting in blurry or hazy vision.

Cataract Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is time to see an eye doctor near you for an eye exam:

  • Blurry vision
  • Bright colors seem faded or have a yellow tint
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to bright lights
  • Seeing double

Causes of Cataracts

One of the most common reasons for cataracts is aging. As we get older, proteins in the lens decrease and break down, leading to a cloudy lens. Other causes include:

  • Family history of cataracts
  • Medical conditions
  • Eye injury
  • Previous eye surgery
  • Radiation treatments
  • Excessive sun exposure without wearing sunglasses
  • Certain medications
  • Smoking

How Are Cataracts Treated

Cataracts are a common issue that can be corrected with appropriate eye care, including cataract surgery. During this surgical procedure, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. Once the lens is replaced, clear vision is typically restored. Laser cataract surgery is a non-invasive and pain-free procedure. It involves using a laser to make a small incision on the surface of the eye. A probe is then inserted into the incision, using sound waves to break apart the damaged lens. After the lens is fragmented, a second probe is used to remove the debris.
