What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common vision condition that causes blurred vision at any distance. In individuals with astigmatism, the cornea or lens of the eye has an irregular shape, which prevents light from properly focusing on the retina. This results in distorted and unclear vision. However, with a proper diagnosis and treatment from an eye doctor, astigmatism can be effectively managed.

What Causes Astigmatism?

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens has slight asymmetries or curvatures rather than a perfectly round shape. This condition can be present from birth or develop later in life. The causes include:

  • Irregularities in the shape of the cornea
  • Stress that causes distortion of the cornea or lens
  • Scarring or thinning of the cornea
  • Aging-related changes in the lens

Genetics may also play a role in the development of astigmatism.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

Common symptoms of astigmatism include:

  • Blurred vision at all distances
  • Headaches or eyestrain
  • Difficulty seeing details
  • The need to squint or tilt the head to see more clearly
  • Distortion, with objects appearing stretched out
  • Glare, halos, and light sensitivity

Even minor amounts of astigmatism can lead to eye discomfort or visual disturbances. Severe astigmatism can significantly impair eyesight.

Diagnosing Astigmatism

During an eye exam, optometrists can detect astigmatism using tests such as:

  • Refraction to determine prescription strength
  • Retinoscopy to evaluate focusing
  • Keratometry to measure corneal curvature
  • Slit lamp exam to inspect the cornea

Treating Astigmatism

Astigmatism can be corrected with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses designed to compensate for the irregular curvature. Toric lenses, which have different powers in different meridians, can counteract distortions. Refractive surgery, such as LASIK, can also reshape the cornea to reduce astigmatism.
